The George Nicoll Spoon Wood is based on the socket head 1920 Bulger design. Its head was revered for its ease of play and is a favourite amongst traditionalists who still enjoy the feeling of a true persimmon head. The Spoon is the equivalent of a 3 or 4 Wood today, and a Spoon was the generic name adopted with the long nose clubs of the 1800s because of their slightly concave spoon-like face. The full brass sole plates did not become common until the 1890s, when they were then named “Brassies.” They were originally made to play from lies on gravel roads and other hard surfaces.
