Gutta Percha Golf Ball Set
The Guttie Selection is a one-of-a-kind gift for golf enthusiasts, featuring three iconic Gutta Percha golf balls: the Smooth, the Hammered, and the Bramble. Each ball represents a key stage in the evolution of the golf ball, offering a unique glimpse into the history of the game. In the 1840s, the popular Featherie ball was expensive, costing about 4 shillings, and prone to damage, especially from iron clubs. The search for a more durable and affordable option led to the creation of the Gutta Percha ball. Made from a tough brown-black rubber material, this new ball could withstand the hardest of swings, making golf far more accessible to the masses and sparking a surge in new players. The Guttie Selection is a unique golf ball gift consisting of three Gutta Percha golf balls; the Smooth, the Hammered and the Bramble.
Artisans made the gutta-percha ball from a brown-black rubber type material, the gum extract from the Malaysian Sapodilla tree. When heated in water, the hardened gum could be easily shaped and hand-rolled into near-perfect spheres, which could withstand any amount of bad golf swings.
The primary disadvantage to this revolutionary ball was its poor aerodynamic capabilities. This disadvantage was soon overcome by intentionally marking the ball using a chisel headed hammer, with ball makers such as Robertson, Dunn and Forgan using different patterns. When finished, the players usually painted the balls with lead-based paint according to the season: red for winter, white for summer. The much-favoured mould made design was the bramble pattern, which artisans carried forward to the next generation of rubber core balls.
Gutta Percha is the Malaysian phrase for tree sap initially derived from the Sapodilla tree. A member of the Sapotaceae family, sapodilla is native to Central and South America, specifically from the Yucatan Peninsula of Mexico to Costa Rica. But now found throughout the world's tropical regions, including Malaysia, India, and the West Indies. First discovered being used for handles on daggers and knives in Malaysia, the substance was tough but became very pliable when immersed in hot water.
These unique reproduction golf balls come in an attractive wooden tube, including a note about the history of golf balls. They are close resemblances to the authentic Gutta Percha balls, and you can play golf with these balls.
