Hickory Golf Spoon Wood by George Nicoll
This 1920s style George Nicoll Spoon is favored by players who prefer carrying just one wood in their bag. It’s versatile, useful off the tee to get the ball in play, and easy to handle on the fairway or light rough for long shots. With a 17-degree loft, it's comparable to a modern 3 or 4 wood. This Spoon features a full brass sole plate, giving you the confidence to hit the ball from any surface. Brass sole plates were designed to be used from difficult lies on gravel roads and hard surfaces. The Spoon name was adopted from the long nose clubs of the 1800s because of their slightly concave spoon-like-face.

In golf’s early days, players used wooden Long Nose Clubs from the tee, which later evolved into Transitional Clubs and eventually the Bulger Clubs. All were made from wood, and club makers began incorporating brass sole plates—either half or full—allowing for use on hard ground without damaging the club. This innovation led to the popularity of Brassies, Spoons and Baffys in the early 1900s, marking them as a core three woods in hickory golf.
This reproduction hickory golf club is crafted based on an original from the hickory golf era and is fully compliant with all global Hickory Golf competition rules and regulations.
